THIS LIGHTHOUSE IS ONE OF FOUR COLONIAL LIGHTHOUSES
AUTHORIZED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON AND DEDICATED BY
GEN.LAFAYETTE. IN 1788 CONGRESS APPROPRIATED MONEY
AND ENGAGED TWO STONE MASONS FROM PORTLAND TO
BUILD THE STRUCTURE WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN 1790.
FIRST LIGHTED ON JAN. 10.179| WITH THE USE OF WHALE
OIL LAMPS.LATER CHANGED TO KEROSENE.TODAY THE LIGHT
IS AN AIRPORT TYPE BEACON WITH A 1000 WATT LAMP.
A LENS OF 200.000 CANDLEPOWER. AND VISIBLE FOR
APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES.
