St. John's Wort is a flowering plant that can be found across temperate areas of Eurasia and has been introduced as an invasive weed to much of North and South America, as well as South Africa and Australia. While the species is harmful to livestock and can interfere with prescription drugs, it has been used in folk medicine over centuries, and remains commercially cultivated in the 21st century.

Beverly Read was born and raised in the northern part of California, US. She grew up on a farm and early learned to ride horses and milk cows. In the early 1960's she graduated high school and went on to a year of college before going to work. She married and had two children. Later she lived in other parts of the US, but in 1984 returned to California. She currently lives in the mountains between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe with her husband, Ray. From the time Beverly started taking snapshots of family to the present she has always loved images. She graduated to better cameras and finally digital ones.
